Dressmaker is, in the press kit's words, a cozy game "inspired by real-world dressmaking (but not requiring any prior knowledge)". Each dress runs through the same stations: journal, fabric shop, cutting table, mannequin and sewing machine. You can jump between them at any time, according to dreamcatcheross's tutorial guide.

1. Start in the journal

  • Read the requirements. A commission lists the style tags the client wants. Some say "at most", such as "Cute – At Most 40", and you have to stay below that marker (dreamcatcheross; Seerolz calls these "max" requirements).
  • See every pattern. Click the pattern name, not the arrows, to open the full list. Dots under a name mean it has variants, for example straps with or without bows (dreamcatcheross).
  • Drag swatches onto the page. Fabric and accessory swatches on the journal page change the stats. Colouring the sketch does not (dreamcatcheross).
  • Read the bars. The yellow line is the target. Dark green is what you are guaranteed, and striped green is the range that depends on how you use the fabric. A gold trait helps, red hurts and grey has no effect (Seerolz).

2. Measure once

Measurements are worth 20 points of a dress's Quality score. A client's measurements never change, so you only need to take them once (dreamcatcheross). On later dresses, use the Load measurements button under Confirm (Seerolz). If Quality reads below 20 at the cutting table, the mannequin measurements are wrong. Go back to the journal before you cut anything.

3. Cut with the grain

The Steam page says whether a piece is "aligned to the grain or cut on bias, how you choose to arrange and cut out your fabric is what appears on the final dress."

  • The double-arrow grain line on each piece turns green when it is 100% aligned. Cutting off-grain costs a little Quality but lets you use gradients and prints in new ways (dreamcatcheross).
  • The scroll wheel rotates a piece in 12° steps, which include 0° and 90°. Grab the centre of a piece to move it without rotating it (Clari).
  • A/D or the arrow keys roll out more or less fabric, up to 15 yards. Pieces in the recycling basket give their fabric back only if you haven't cut the excess off yet (Seerolz, dreamcatcheross).
  • Put every piece on the mannequin before you sew. Fabric-percentage rules, such as "50% velvet", only read accurately once the pieces are on (dreamcatcheross).

4. Sew

  • Sew with Space, the right mouse button or the mouse wheel. R resets the current piece, the seam ripper undoes stitches and Z zooms (dreamcatcheross).
  • W sews faster and S slower. Turn on sewing assist in the settings and tap Space instead of holding it (Clari, Seerolz). Per chaseit's achievements guide, sewing assist isn't penalised.
  • If you can't finish a dress, you have probably missed a pattern piece or left a seam unsewn (Seerolz).

5. Decorate and finish

  • Shift duplicates the accessory you are placing. WASD pans and scroll rotates the mannequin. An "Accessory Rotation Gizmo" option is in the settings (Seerolz).
  • Lay trim in short runs between pins. Right-click deletes back to the last pin, and trim is sewn on automatically when you finish (SilverLyrics). Clari found about 1.7 m fits in one run before you need a pin.
  • After the photo you can hand in the commission. Once those options unlock, you can also sell the dress off the rack or give it to a client as a gift (dreamcatcheross).

The Steam store page also lists a mouse-only option and "Playable without Timed Input".
